Understanding Gum Disease: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments
Written by Dr. Aastha Khadka

Did you know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults? Periodontal (gum) disease is a silent condition that often presents no pain until it is in its advanced stages. Here is what you need to know to protect your gums.
Stage 1: Gingivitis
The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, caused by plaque buildup along the gumline. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss. The good news? Gingivitis is completely reversible with a professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene.
Stage 2: Periodontitis
If left untreated, gingivitis advances to periodontitis. The inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form infected pockets. As the body's immune system fights the infection, the bone holding the teeth in place begins to break down. This leads to loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
- Receding gums (teeth looking longer than before)
- Changes in how your teeth fit together when you bite
